Escape Velocity is a creative project of films and live performance works made by and with young trans and gender non-conforming people in Melbourne in 2019 and 2020.
Created through a partnership between St Martins and Minus18, Escape Velocity is an artistic response to some of the anxieties faced by young people in public space that we’d like to share with you.
The term ‘escape velocity’ is used in physics to describe the energy needed for an object to move away from another body’s gravitational pull. In our case, Escape Velocity refers to the collective energy we need as a community to free ourselves from judgement, insensitivity and exclusion.
Over 2019 and 2020, Escape Velocity will create four series of art works: three short film series, and a live performance work.
In the first series, each of the films portrays a young person facing a challenge, then gathering their courage to speak up, make a choice, or act in a new way that affirms who they are in the world.
We hope Escape Velocity inspires you to become an ally: to learn more, and to support individuals who are trans or gender non-conforming, or organisations and campaigns around Australia who support and advocate for these communities.
